Skip Dickstein: My favorite image of 2011 was made by mistake. The picture captured the expression on jockey Chantal Sutherland’s face when the horse she was riding in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs, Game on Dude, was overtaken at the wire by Drosselmeyer, who coincidentally was ridden by her ex-boyfriend, jockey Mike Smith. Her expression says everything about her feelings.
When I said that the image was made by mistake, well, it was. I missed Drosselmeyer winning the race as I focused on the second-place horse coming down the rail. It happens at times when using long focal length lenses that you might miss a horse running wide at the finish. I never saw Drosselmeyer running in the middle of the track and the photo of Sutherland and her expression was the result.
