Disappointing finish in Dubai for Sutherland

Chantal Sutherland made history by being the first woman rider to start in the Dubai World Cup. The finish, however, was not quite as historic.

The Toronto native could not get her mount, Game On Dude, to fire in the stretch of the $10-million US race and faded to near the back of the 14-horse field.

Sutherland and her mount finished second in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic but a similar effort was not to be at Meydan Race course as they made a brief move as the field ran to the top of the stretch but faded badly after that. Sutherland said the horse did not take well to the track’s synthetic surface.

“He just got a little frazzled after not breaking so great. Then he relaxed,” she said. “On the backside he just wanted to get into his rhythm. So I did what I always do, and let him try to get there and I waited. The track is very tiring.”

The $6-million top prize went to Monteroso, who took the lead in mid-stretch and drew away under French jockey Mickael Barzelona to a clear win. Sent off in mutual pools available to local bettors at 35-1, the Godolphin-owned five-year-old was third in last year’s World Cup but had come into this race with only one start since then.

The operation of Sheikh Mohammed also captured the $1-million Godolphin Mile with African Story and the $1-million Dubai Gold Cup with Opinion Poll in a race that was originally stopped due to a death on the track of another Godolphin runner, Fox Hunt, but was re-run at the end of the card.
